Good advice from Hal

Note from Hal Croasmun:

Hi Screenwriter,

Hal Croasmun
In this issue, we have a great interview with a screenwriter who made
$3.2 million for his screenplay SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN.  Very exciting!
You’ve got to love those “lottery wins.”  They happen every few months and they do motivate us to go for the dream.  But at the same time, there’s a practical strategy for building a career that underlies every huge deal.

Most writers who succeed build their screenwriting career one step at a time.
My advice:

  1. Learn how to write great screenplays.
  2. Enter contests and get coverage to gauge your quality.
  3. Work with small producers to gain experience.
  4. Enter the larger markets (higher budget Indies and Studios) for big success!

As you’re taking those steps, you can enter the lottery as many times as you’d like.  But doing this process will improve your screenplays, get you prepared, and increase your confidence/competence in working with producers.
Use that plan and you’ll get there!
