7 Jul 2015 Don't try this at home, kids, but sometimes we climb up on the Claiborne Ave. bridge at night just to see the view. The whole city is laid out right in front of you. The Mighty Mississippi is just a few blocks to the left and, at the same time, it's 3 miles in front of you. It's Crescent shape makes you see double. This is my third time living in this city. We found this view during this present stopover. This is one place where the NOLA of today dissects the New Orleans of my dreams. #nolaasfuck #nola #NewOrleans 0
27 Jun 2015 From this vantage point, I can observe the project my mom grew up in. In real life, it is no longer standing. Disassembled brick by brick after Katrina. Down Canal my Aunt Velma shopped at Kroger. You could do all your shopping on Canal in her day. You could get your hair dyed red as a fire engine. Where Uptown meets Downtown was the place to be. In a picture taken on Canal my grandmother, young and strong as an ox, holds onto a sailor for dear life. No one knows who the sailor is. My grandmother is long dead. My mother has forgotten if she ever knew. I sometimes construct a back story for him. No way to know what really happened. No clouded memories. We are only the product of our stories up to this point. #stories #canalstreet #nola 0
24 Jun 2015 This is Mr. Joe’s 98th Louisiana summer. “Most days I sit outside in the morning while it’s still cool. When I was a boy, I used to help my sister wash the sheets in the morning. She said I had strong hands. It was so hot. You sweat so much in the night, you had to wash the damn sheets every morning by hand.” He must have had strong hands because after washing the sheets, he went to work in the sugar cane fields picking the cane by hand. #hands #sugarcane #thegreatdepression 0
