Patrick and I both share a love for the works of Terrence Malick. Though his career spans 35 years, he’s only directed 4 films (Badlands, Days of Heaven, Thin Red Line and The New World) all of them brilliant. His films are characterized by stream-of-consciousness voice over and poetic visuals. He was one of our inspirations for Tokyo Cowboys, and he continues to inspire us for this current project. Voice over…script purists say it’s lazy. But, Malick’s voice over is never expository. It’s exploratory. So, I’ve started writing voice over for each of the characters. I’m still not sure if we will use it. Patrick is more convinced. But, if for nothing else, it helps me get into the heads of the characters. Thank you Mr. Malick for being there.
